Greece

As a result of the European demonstration flights described earlier, in October 1930 the Greek Government initially ordered a single IIIF Mk I. This was followed on 23 July 1931 by the delivery of ten Mk IIIBS with Lion XIA engines, c/ns F1479-1488, as seaplanes for the nation's naval air service. Finished in aluminium dope and natural metal, with black fuselage top-decking, they went to Hamble on 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 16, 18, 19, 21 and 24 February, respectively, carried the serials N1 to N12 and had national insignia on the fuselage, wings and tail. Flight reported in its issue for 20 March, 1931, that a batch of six IIIFs for Greece 'were put through their tests at Fairey's Hamble seaplane station last week before Captain Phocas, Greek Naval Attaché, and Lieut-Comm Averoff, of the Greek Navy'. These aircraft were fitted with floats of a new type. In addition to the normal transverse step they had a fore-and-aft step along each chine from the bow to the transverse step-in other words, the 'vee' bottom did not extend right to the chine, but joined a horizontal surface some 6 inches wide, which extended inboard from the chine. Flight reported: 'The float shape, although of such simple lines that no panel beating is required, has a marked influence on the clean running, the fore and aft steps deflecting the water and preventing the spray from rising to any great height. In alighting, the sharp vee bottom of the aft portion of the floats cut in with scarcely any spray, and the machines land remarkably cleanly.' In 1935-36, S1189 (F913), S1377 (F1239), S1786 and S1817 were also sold to Greece. In October 1940 No 11 Navy Co-operation Squadron had nine operational IIIFs.
The handing-over of six Fairey IIIF Mk IIIBs to the Greek Government took place at Hamble, Southampton, on 12 March 1931. Here Fairey director Mr Hazell speaks into the microphone shielded by his coat. Captain Phocas, the Greek Naval Attaché, is standing immediately next to him.
